Description: The determination of coastal risk is a key component of determining Coastal Management Lines (CMLs). And this is considered to be the one of the first steps in determining the CMLs.

These risk lines are NOT the CMLs, the intention of these lines is to provide an indication as to potential coastal risk in light of sea-level rise, short-term and long-term shoreline change and extreme events.

The three lines represent three time horizons:
RED: Short term; 5-10 years; Period correlates with current risk to motivate action.
ORANGE: Medium term; 50 years; Period correlates with the time span of a generation. Typical design lifetime of non-critical infrastructure.
YELLOW: Long term; 100 years; Period for long term forecasts. Design lifetime of more critical infrastructure.

These lines are for information purposes ONLY. These do not replace the development set-back line or any EIA regulations.

Description: In 2007 KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) experienced first-hand the effects an extreme weather event can have on infrastructure, property and services. This led to the need for a better understanding of the coast’s vulnerability to the risks posed by such events and related coastal erosion impacts. A Coastal Vulnerability Index (CVI) was developed whereby small sections of the coast were ranked, based on their relative degree of vulnerability as: RISK, MODERATE Risk or HIGH RISK.
A CVI of 9-14 were considered at lower risk, 15-19 at moderate risk and 20-28 at higher risk.
