Description: Assembly of the dataset was a joint venture between SANParks and SANBI. An earlier national protected areas layer, prepared for the NPAES 2008 project was used as the starting point, and was updated to reflect the current state of protected areas in South Africa.
Additional data for contact nature reserves for theWestern Cape and KwaZulu Natal provinces have been added (proclaimed by end December 2011).
The most recent marine protected areas, updated forthe Marine component of the NBA 2011 were also incorporated into this layer.

Note that the dataset can be considered fairly reliable for the formal protected area system, but is known to contain significant errors and omissions in the Informal Conservation Area system data.

Description: The South African Protected Areas Database (SAPAD) contains spatial data for the conservation estate of South Africa. It includes spatial and attribute information for both formally protected areas and areas that have less formal protection. Data is collected by parcels which are aggregated to protected area level. Only outer boundaries are defined in this public release. RAMSAR sites were excluded from this layer as it is shown as a separate layer on its own.

SAPAD is updated on a continuous basis. It forms the basis for the Register of Protected Areas which is a legislative requirement under the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act, Act 57 of 2003.

Description: The Important Bird and Biodiveristy Areas (IBA) Programme is a BirdLife International Programme to conserve habitats that are important for birds. These areas are defined according to a strict set of guidelines and criteria based on the species that occur in the area. The Important Bird Areas of Southern Africa directory was first published 1998 and identified within South Africa 122 IBAs. In September 2015 a revised IBA Directory was published by BirdLife South Africa. All these IBAs were objectively determined using established and globally accepted criteria. An IBA is selected on the presence of the following bird species in a geographic area:
- Bird species of global or regional conservation concern;
- Assemblages of restricted-range bird species;
- Assemblages of biome-restricted bird species; and
- Concentrations of numbers of congregatory bird species.

The following data are mentioned in the attribute table:
Protection: Indicating the protection status of the IBA
IBA Status: An IBA can be classified as a Global or Sub-regional IBA based on the criteria used to define the IBA.

Only those areas within 10km of KZN's coastline are displayed.
